Sarees for Indian summer

Why pure silk struggles in summer

Silk is a protein fibre and a natural insulator — the same property that makes a silk saree warm and comfortable in a Hyderabad December works against you in May. Silk also holds moisture against the skin rather than wicking it away, which is why a pure silk saree becomes uncomfortable quickly in humid heat. Cotton does the opposite: it absorbs moisture and releases it to the air, so the fabric keeps cooling as you wear it.

Tissue cotton silk: the compromise that works

Tissue cotton silk blends a cotton foundation with fine silk and zari. You keep the shimmer and formality a function calls for while the cotton content does the breathing. It is the practical answer for daytime weddings, temple visits and office functions between March and June, where pure cotton reads too casual and pure silk is simply too hot.

Caring for summer sarees

Cotton sarees can be gently hand washed in cold water; tissue cotton silk should be dry cleaned, because the silk and zari content will not survive washing. Both crease more readily than heavier weaves, so store them folded with tissue paper between layers rather than on a hanger, and refold along different lines every few months so permanent creases do not set.
